Coloured Diamonds

Not many people are aware of the fact that diamonds do not only come in a colourless/white colour. Diamonds come in a rainbow of colours which are very beautiful and often more desirable then colourless diamonds. Over 300 colours have so far been identified, these come in an infinite number of shades. Coloured diamonds are extremely rare and this makes them extremely expensive. Coloured diamonds can be valued for 100 times more than that of a colourless diamond. To be classified as a coloured diamond the diamond needs to be classified as a colour more than Z on the colour grading chart. Coloured diamonds come in black, blue, champagne, cognac, green, orange, pink, purple, red and yellow. They have been considered to be more valuable then colourless diamonds since the 16th century. The order of rareness of coloured diamonds is: black, brown, yellow, pink, blue, green, orange, violet and red. Red is the rarest diamond colour. Intensely coloured diamonds are the rarest and most beautiful diamonds.

What causes diamonds to be coloured?

Diamonds are made from pure carbon that has crystallised more than 100km beneath the earths surface. They are brought up to the surface of the earth through volcanic activity. Sometimes during this activity to the earths surface other atoms become trapped inside the diamond. The most common atom is Nitrogen, the smallest amount of nitrogen can cause a blue light to be absorbed giving the diamond a yellowish colour. Green diamonds have come into contact with radioactive minerals such as uranium. Even though colourless diamonds are the traditional diamond for an engagement ring more and more people are turning to coloured diamonds for other diamond jewellery, such as pink diamond stud earrings and a diamond bracelet made from many colours.
